Queralt Castellet, Subcampeona del mundo

Queralt Castellet ha logrado la Medalla de Plata en el Mundial de Snowboard que se está celebrando estos días en la estación austriaca de Kresichberg. Queralt llevaba persiguiendo este pódium desde hace algún tiempo porque su calidad y su trabajo necesitaban esta recompensa. Hoy, por fin, se abrió el melón.

Que Queralt estaba muy fina en este Mundial quedó claro en las Clasificatorias de ayer porque logró la cuarta mejor nota (85.75) en su primera ronda. Por delante de ella estaban la australiana Torah Bright (86.75), la china Xuetong Cai (88.50) y la francesa Clemence Grimal (90.00). La Final la completaban la también francesa Sophie Rodriguez (82.25) y la japonesa Hikaru Oe (76.00).

Estas 6 riders tenían que luchar por las medallas en la tarde de hoy durante tres rondas. La mejor nota de las tres conseguidas por cada corredora sería la que contaría para la Clasificación Final. Queralt salía en la 3ª posición. En su primera ronda estuvo fantástica porque logró una nota de 81.25 con la que terminaría logrando el Subcampeonato del Mundo. En esta primera ronda ninguna de sus rivales había alcanzado los 80 puntos salvo la china Xuetong Cai que hizo 90.25.

En la 2ª ronda Queralt arriesgó para mejorar su nota e intentar superar a la china pero suele ocurrir que cuando se arriesga, se puede fallar y por eso terminó con una nota de 18.75. En cambio, Xuetong Cai hizo la ronda perfecta porque consiguió una nota de 94.25 que le ponía el Campeonato en bandeja.

El Oro se le escapaba a Queralt pero la Plata estaba más cerca porque el resto de corredoras seguía por detrás de ella al término de la segunda ronda.

La tercera ronda fue de infarto pues con el Oro prácticamente inalcanzable y con la Plata entre sus dedos, cabía la posibilidad de perder toda opción a las medallas como ya ocurriera en otras ocasiones. No olvidemos que en esta disciplina del Snowboard las notas están en manos de los jueces y que, hace apenas un año, nos quedamos con un palmo de narices en la Final de los Juegos de Sochi al contemplar cómo los jueces la puntuaban muy por debajo del nivel demostrado por Queralt en la ronda que le pudo dar una medalla. Pero en el deporte siempre existe la posibilidad de obtener una revancha.

En la tercera y última ronda ninguna de las corredoras, (a excepción de la china Xuetong Cai que volvió a estar a gran nivel logrando una nota de 89.25), fue capaz de superar la puntuación de la primera ronda de Queralt y nuestra rider consiguió la ansiada medalla en un Mundial de Snowboard absoluto.

Esta medalla ha tardado mucho en llegar porque Queralt Castellet es desde hace años una referencia y todo un ejemplo para la mayoría de los riders españoles pero, sobre todo, porque la merecía desde hacía mucho tiempo. Quizás por eso, este Subcampeonato sabe tan bien. Ahora que se ha abierto el melón seguro que caerán muchas más medallas.

SOCHI 2014 Sarka Pancochova shatters helmet in violent crash

Czech slopestyler walks away from first scary moment of Games.

One of the first scary moments at the Sochi Games occurred Sunday afternoon when Czech snowboarder Sarka Pancochova took a nasty spill during the women’s slopestyle competition.

Coming out of a big jump, the 23-year-old Pancochova failed to fully rotate, leading to a fall that saw her head slam into the snow-covered hill.

As emergency services personnel rushed to her aid, Pancochova’s body appeared to briefly go limp before she came to a stop at the bottom of the course.

The back of Pancochova’s helmet split in two as a result of the violent nature of her fall.

She was eventually helped to her feet and completed her final run, finishing fifth courtesy a first-run score of 86.25.

American Jamie Anderson won gold with a score of 92.25.

Finland’s Enni Rukajarvi and Britain’s Jenny Jones finished second and third, respectively.
