Marcus Kleveland: A slice of a snowboarding life

Portrait Of A Young Snowboarder - Marcus Kleveland
Norway is to pro snowboarders what Japan is to sushi, and Scotland is to whisky: sure, other countries produce them, but not in the same quantity or quality. Which is a mixed blessing if you’re a snowboarder. The level is so high, that on one hand it pushes you to be the best rider you can be. But, on the other, it’s insanely hard to get noticed – some of the best snowboarders in the world are unknown, unsponsored Norwegians.
In Marcus Kleveland’s case, getting noticed wasn’t a problem when, at the age of 13, he became the youngest rider ever to land a Triple Cork. In a sport constantly searching for the next big thing, the spotlight was shining bright on Marcus, but would it last?
In this atmospheric short film, filmmaker Pirmin Juffinger picks up the story two years on, to find out how this smiling, quietly spoken kid from northern Norway is progressing, both as a rider and a person.
Pretty good, it turns out. Living next to his local ski hill, riding all the time, relatively sheltered from the outside world, Marcus has the same air of innocence he had at 13. As a rider, he is focused on refining and perfecting his skills, and his goal is to win the Olympics. As a person, his goal is simple: “To be myself, not anybody else. Just be true to this.”

STOP #9 OF VOLCOM PBRJ EUROPEAN TOUR 2014 | MADRID, SPAIN

Click here for the full report and pictures: vol.cm/1lFhA94
This season the spanish stop was the last one of the tour and took place in Madrid like last year, moving to ParkCenter Valdesquí. The snowpark is managed by Oscar and Madrid is a strategic point accessible from all over Spain. The set up this year was managed by experts Yeyo and Polanco brothers, who delighted everyone with their ideas. The second zone in the middle took the most attention, it consisted of a roof wallie obstacle connected to a rail. Everyone had fun riding the event setup. There were many locals in all categories but some people from France, Portugal and even from Czech Republic (Jakob Simoner) signed up at the contest. Some hero names like Curro Santander, Mario Prestel, Pilar De La Cruz, Paula Benito Jorge Polanco, Mati Ian and some more catched all the eyes in the place.
But the main protagonist was the very bad weather we had to suffer all day long. Staff, cameramen, judges, everyone had to work super hard due to those conditions and the neither was easy for the riders. But thanks to all the crew that helped out so much, the event was a total success. The BBQ from Chef Jesus helped a little bit to keep us fed and warm against the siberian storm we had to suffer. One dude surprised the judges so he took home the best prize in the comp, Dani Tovar. He was supper happy and exited about going to Mammoth Mountains for the PBRJ World Final. There´s just left to thank everyone who help made this happen: NITRO and UNION bindings, Park Center Valdesquí, Yeyo (Happy birthday bro, we properly celebrated it), Juan and Jorge Polanco, Alvaro Ilovemyboard, Kakol, Nines, Roke, Iñigin, Pablo, Gore, Kakol, Jesus, Noelia, Morche and Abel, Maxime Bouviere, Jose del Corral (Jib Kung Do) and all participants who showed up. Terje Haakonsen and Ben Ferguson: Art of Carve

Cruising the groomers is one of the first things a snowboarder does, but also one of the hardest to really master. Lots of people can ride fast, but it's not until you see a guy like Terje Haakonsen effortlessly blast a huge method off of a nonexistent bump, or Ben Ferguson lay down an armpit dragging carve that you realize just what's possible on a regular old groomer. Riding fast, getting creative, and looking good doing it are a few of the things that can really show how good a pro snowboarder is.

In the world of superpipes, triple corks, massive wedges in the backcountry, it's easy to forget what snowboarding is really about: making the most out of natural terrain and having fun. Whether locking into a tripod, dragging your chin on a carve, or slashing your way into the whiteroom, there is a lot of fun that can be had riding the groomers. Watch as two guys on each end of the spectrum show how much fun you can have just ripping around the mountain. After seeing Terje's method 55 seconds in, or Ben's backside 360 tripod at 1:17, you will be left open-mouthed and shaking your head with a few more tricks added to your checklist.
